Special Project Topics.
1. The child custody battle between the Yearning For Zion Ranch members in Eldorado,
and the State of Texas.
2. Governor Rick Perry’s executive order for mandating HPV shots for 14 year old girls.
3. Children's Health Insurance Program.
4. Austin Alterative Energy programs.
For the topic on the child custody battle between the Yearning For Zion Ranch members in Eldorado, and the State of
Texas a brief history will be need. Also list the pro’s and con’s of Texas Supreme Court decision for the children to return
to their mothers.
As the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) have been in the headlines during the past year, I think it will be
interesting to research. A brief history should be included in your report, regarding problems, scandals, budget, and
such. Include a explanation of what the legislators and various interest groups want to change and accomplish. List the
sponsors of bills (who are their contributors, who will stand to gain with these changes.) Do not forget to look into
proposed and new regulations or changes in regulations. What are some of the faults of the CHIP program? Who pays for
the program? Who uses the program? Is the Federal government involved? What are some of the problems at the
Federal level? Who runs the CHIP program, what is the big picture of the CHIP program? Austin American-Statesman is
an excellent source and Chapter 13 of your textbook.
Why was there so much controversy about mandating HPV shots? Who were for and who were against this order, and the
legislation that would overturn this order? What were their reasons? Who would profit or lose by this legislation? What
are the concerns mentions in New England Journal of Medicine?
The city of Austin offers many programs from conservation to using alterative energy sources; some are as simple as not
using plastic bags to selling solar energy electric production to the city. For this paper I would not try to cover all of the
programs, but find an area one is interested in and write about it. When you are discussing this project in group you may
want to have only one member cover one area so in your group presentation you cover all of the different programs.
The content of your paper should show that you are studying Texas and local governments by using terms from your
book. I recommend using the writing style: Introduction, Body, and Conclusion. Papers must have at least three quotes,
and use endnotes and/or footnotes to show where these quotes came from. The length of this paper should be at least 5
and no more than 9 pages not counting the title page, and work’s cited page. Papers should be done in the Modern
Language Association (MLA) style for documenting the use of sources. MLA guidelines can be found at ACC writing
centers, and on line (the class website has a very good link for MLA and writing.) For many of you this might be your first
college paper, an important point to remember, is have you proven your conclusion by the contents in your paper?
The last part of this special project will be a class presentation of the topic (5-10 minutes long) involving all of the
students that have worked on the same topic with a conclusion of their thoughts on the topic. This project is worth 52
points.
